The Children's Montessori House, known locally as TCMH, has been part of the Castries community since 2005.

Our approach is founded on the Montessori Method of Education, developed in the early 1900s in Rome by Dr. Maria Montessori and now used in schools all over the world. At its heart is respect, for the individual, for others, and for the environment, and a belief that children grow through carefully guided stages of independence. We call this "normalization": a child in harmony with themselves and their surroundings, who has learned not just to work, but to genuinely enjoy working.

Everything we do works toward six goals for every child: a genuine love of learning, real self-confidence, the habit of deep concentration, an abiding curiosity, the initiative to work independently, and an inner sense of order and security. We don't chase these through worksheets or tests, we build them through a carefully prepared environment where children choose meaningful work and see it through.

A Prepared Environment

Every shelf, every material, every corner of our classrooms is placed with a purpose. This is what Montessori calls the "prepared environment", a space simplified and ordered enough that a child's need for security is met, but rich enough to invite real exploration. Materials are sized for small hands and arranged so children can choose their own work, engage with it fully, and return it exactly where it belongs. It's this order, not rigidity, that gives children the freedom to concentrate, explore, and grow.

A Small Community

With small classes and mixed-age groupings, the school stays a place where every child is known by name. Older children naturally mentor younger ones, and younger children learn by watching those just ahead of them. Parents are treated as partners in this community, not spectators to it.

Our Story

Founded with purpose

Founder: Dalia Aidoo

Established: 2005

Dalia Aidoo is the Middle and Upper School Science Department Head at the Spence School. She joined Spence from the Collegiate School, where she taught K-12 science and served as the Science Department Head. This experience fostered her passion for curriculum design, relationship building, and coaching teachers. She earned her post-graduate degree in secondary education at The Institute of Education, University of London.
